FORTA-FI® is approved under NYSDOT Specification #406.XXYZ0108 and has been used in over 1 millions tons of asphalt across the state.
At FORTA, our goal is to create tougher, more durable pavements, while helping the asphalt industry use time, money, & material resources wisely. Our products offer innovative solutions to protect & enhance asphalt’s longevity while expanding the pavement’s life cycle.
We accomplish this by adding 3D fiber reinforcement with FORTA-FI. This unique fiber holds aggregate together, increasing the asphalt’s durability. FORTA has conducted a tremendous amount of research over the years including projects with NCAT, MnROADS, FHWA, PSU, & ASU. Our fibers have been shown to reduce rutting and cracking allowing for reduced future maintenance.
The Story of New York gives you an in-depth view of how the state started combating the issues associated with composite overlays.
Savings realized by the reduced repair work & deferment of scheduled maintenance has allowed states like New York to begin to catch up on years of backlogged projects. Using reinforced asphalt permits transportation dollars to be used replacing poor asphalt, not maintaining it.
After 5 years this roadway still shows limited cracking, mostly near the start and stop of paving days. When comparing the saw & sealed section to the 2” direct overlay, inspectors stated that there was no increase in performance and would recommend saving time and money in the future. The town of Trumbull, Connecticut completed a side-by-side project using FORTA-FI reinforcement fibers. Contractors milled 2” and replaced with a 0.75” leveling course and 1.5” compacted wear course using a wedge joint. The wear course used fiber reinforcement in the east bound lanes on both roads. The leveling course also benefitted from the use of fiber as noted. Click here to see this award winning project!
