Fashion Island Ring Road

Newport Beach, CA - 2013

Description

A 6” AC over 6” AB pavement section was required to support the design traffic loading for this reconstruction, but the new section needed to fit within 9” of total depth to avoid disturbing the subgrade and match the existing curb. An alternative pavement section of 4” FRAC (FORTA-FI® reinforced asphalt concrete) over 5” AB was designed with Caltrans methodology to meet the required traffic loading and stay within the 9” total depth requirement. The FRAC option saved upfront cost through reduced materials and also significantly reduced construction time.
