Project Description
Wilmington Township is a rural community that has a large Amish population. Horse and buggy traffic caused extreme rutting where the horseshoes and metal wheels hit the pavement. A small test section of FORTAfied® asphalt was placed in one lane of a severely rutted road. The other lane was paved without fiber, used as a control section, and then both lanes were covered with tar and chip. Township officials hoped to see a decrease in rutting by using FORTA-FI®.
Update
The roadway was surveyed, 5 years later, in July 2017. The side of the road paved with FORTA-FI® had a decrease in rut depth from 60%-80% when compared to the side without the fiber.
Key Points
- Reduced Rutting
- Reduced Maintenance Costs
- Reduced Cracking
