Project Description
Extreme winters combined with excessive freeze-thaw cycles play a big part in the breakdown of pavement in northwestern New York. Erie County, which encompasses Buffalo, was in search for a way to mitigate reflective cracking and extend their paving dollars. John Loffredo, DPW commissioner, kick-started a pilot project in 2014 testing FORTA-FI® versus polymer modified liquid a. c. as a way to extend the life of the pavements. Hopkins Road was selected and 3-1/2″ was milled followed by 2″ binder then a 1-1/2″ wearing course. Test sections were divided into PG64-22 both with and without fibers.
