Project Description
Northside Drive is a multiple lane roadway just outside of Atlanta, that is exposed to heavy traffic. For this June 2013 project, about two miles of road was milled and resurfaced from Marietta Street to I-75/SR 401. The north section of the road contained a 12.5 mm Superpave with neat asphalt binder reinforced with FORTA-FI® and the south section contained a 12.5 mm Superpave with SBS polymer-modified asphalt binder.
Update
In 2016, NCAT evaluated the performance of the road comparing FORTA-FI® with the SBS polymer-modified asphalt binder. Overall, the two sections were closely comparable in regards to rutting and roughness, with a slight decrease in cracking for the fiber section.
After 5 years of high volume traffic, the fiber reinforced section of Northside Drive is still outperforming the section without fiber.
Key Points
- Extended Pavement Life
- Reduced Rutting & Raveling
- Reduced Cracking
