Project Description
Trumbull County chose to pave Porter Drive, a low volume road, in Trumbull, OH using fiber reinforced 100% RAP fines. The county was looking to utilize their fines, which is usually a waste material, from extracting their chipping aggregate and using it for a leveling course. By using Pave-Aid, a polyamide FORTA fiber blend, they were able to help bond the aggregate due to the fact that all the aggregate was a ¼” minus. This cold pave, direct overlay project used 120 lb/ sq yd of fiber and was paved with a road thickness of 1.5” compacted to 1”. Trumbull County has applied seal coat since paving for pavement preservation prior to winter. All involved were looking for a way to extend pavement life on this road that has a history of problems with rutting, cracking, and raveling. This is the first attempt at using fibers for a paving project.
