Project Description
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) chose to use FORTA-FI reinforced asphalt in their overlay project on State Highway 133 in Cedaredge, CO. This was CDOT’s first use of fibers to address the reflective cracking they were seeing due to thermal loading and traffic impact. On State Highway 133 there is a lot of cracking due to harsh weather conditions in the western slope areas. For this overlay, project engineers used 17,640 tons of FORTA-FI reinforced asphalt and bumped up the original 2-inch overlay to 2.5 inches due to the intense cracking on the existing asphalt. This was the first “big” fiber project in Colorado, and FORTA is excited to see an increase in better performing DOT roads in the future.
Key Points:
- Increase Durability
- Reduce Cracking
- Aid in Weathering
