State Route 130

Cranberry Township, NJ - October 2012

Project Description

The New Jersey Department of Transportation did their pilot project using FORTA-FI® synthetic fiber-reinforcement in October, 2012. SR 130 between Cranberry and East Windsor Townships was selected in part due to its high traffic volume. Approximately 1,000 tons of FORTAfiecfil asphalt was placed in the left southbound lane and an equal section of non-reinforced material was placed in the right southbound lane. Wayne Byard from Trap Rock Industries oversaw the production of the 12.5mm PG64-22 material at their Kingston, NJ plant and Della Pelle contractors placed the material. A 2″ lift was placed over a 1″ binder rich intermediate course (not fiber-reinforced). NJDOT will watch this project over the next several years to study the benefits of fiber reinforced asphalt.
