State Route 220

Jersey Shore, PA - 2013

Project Description

A four mile stretch of SR 220 was broken into three sections. The southbound lane received a micro surfacing treatment and the northbound lane was divided into two – two mile sections. Each two mile section received a 1” thin lay using PG76-22 with one of the sections incorporating FORTA-FI®.

Update

Penn State University (PSU) collected samples to analyze in their lab. PSU lab tests confi rmed a reduction in rutting and
showed the fi ber section as 50% more resistance to rutting than the control. Additionally, the FHWA evaluated fi eld samples in their Mobile Asphalt Testing Trailer (MATT) and provided a full technical report. Field evaluations were performed and skid resistance, international roughness index (IRI), rutting, and transverse cracking were analyzed. The fi ber sections had 27% fewer cracks, 40% less cumulative crack length, and increased dynamic modulus (E*) when compared against the control.

Key Points

  • Extended Pavement Life
  • Reduced Rutting & Raveling
  • Reduced Cracking
