State Route 228

Cranberry Township, PA - 2011

Description

PennDOT chose a 1.33 mile roadway that has an Average Daily Traffic of 19,211 vehicles with 7% trucks as a trial. The project involved milling 2” of asphalt pavement and placing 1 ½” Depth SP Wearing, HMA, PG64-22 on a 1” Depth SP Wearing, HMA, PG 64-22 on the existing 9” depth asphalt pavement and a concrete base at the intersection. The surface was badly cracked with rutting in the intersection area. Saw cutting the asphalt over the existing concrete expansion joints is typical, and several joints in this section were only cut through one lane as a test to see what may happen in the other lane if left uncut. After one year, no cracks have appeared anywhere, and no rutting has occurred.
