Description
A $ 7.7 million construction project for the Tarentum Bridge began in 2012 with “The main driver of the project being the condition of the existing pavement and to restore ride quality” according to PennDOT spokesman Jim Stuzzi. In August 2013 the 1,776 foot bridge was resurfaced using a 1/2” FJ scratch course and then a 1 1/2” wearing course was placed using PG76-22 with 3/4” FORTA-FI® high tensile strength fibers. Both the scratch and wearing course were made with 9.5mm aggregate using a virgin mix (no RAP) at Lane Construction Corporation’s Springdale drum plant. A 440’ control section of wearing course without FORTA-FI® fibers were placed on the eastbound lanes from the start of paving to the first joint. Paving was done during the day over the course of two Saturdays with temperatures in the high 70’s to low 80’s. This is the second bridge deck in as many years for PennDOT District 11-0 using FORTA-FI®.
